Cutberto Hernandez Sr. studied oceanology at the U.A.B.C. School of Marine Sciences, working as a bartender, server and lifeguard to fund his goal of a life on the ocean. He went on to become a sea captain and maritime pilot, and in 1993 he founded Mares Mortgage, which he now leads alongside his sons Cubie and Christian.
As a maritime pilot he guides ships safely into port, the same care he brings to every loan file.
He holds a B.S. in Oceanology from the U.A.B.C. School of Marine Sciences in Ensenada, Baja California.
Married for more than 40 years, he raised three children who all competed in the NCAA and now work in real estate and finance.
He founded Mares Mortgage in 1993 and still helps families and agents chart their course, with applications available in English and Spanish.
